Interview with Johan Engström, Business Development Manager, Spaljisten
"With a share of at least 50% recycled materials, we use as little virgin material as possible. Coupled with the lightweight principle, we thus save weight and freight costs, and improve the CO2 footprint."
Johan Engström, Spaljisten
The Spaljisten company manufactures finished fronts for bedroom, kitchen and living room furniture. With their sustainable kitchen front, the Swedes are a driving force in their markets and lead the way in resource-conserving production methods. An integral part of the project is the "RAUKANTEX eco" edgeband from REHAU, which consists of 50% post-industrial recycled material, as Business Development Manager Johan Engström reports in an interview with HK.
Mr Engström, what was the impetus for the holistic sustainability management that Spaljisten has implemented in its production?
At the beginning of 2017, we developed a new vision for our company: "Spaljisten is a company that produces first-class furniture fronts with an eye on the next generation". Since then, we have striven to establish this slogan as our brand. We work with renowned and demanding customers and have been able, with the expertise of our most important suppliers, to achieve and fulfil all our goals so far.
What is the core competence in your product portfolio?
We have developed a concept called "Thinner, Lighter & Recycled" without compromising on quality. This really makes sense for our customers. With a minimum of 50% recycled content, we use as little virgin material as possible in our components. Coupled with the lightweight construction principle, we thus save weight and freight costs for our kitchen fronts and improve the CO2 footprint. We used recycled polymer for the foil and sustainable RAUKANTEX eco for the edges.
Where are your customers located?
We deliver worldwide and offer a 25-year guarantee on our products.
For the surfaces, you use edgebands from REHAU, one of the leading suppliers on the market. What are the strongest selling points for this product?
When it comes to thinner, lighter and recycled material, we have done a good job of meeting our own goals and expectations and those of our customers with this project. We use 30% less material and over 50% of the material is recycled. Our suppliers are charged with translating our ideas into suitable products. The engineering teams at Spaljisten and at REHAU have worked together as partners to develop products while at the same time driving production and coming up with the perfect solution. The new edgeband line RAUKANTEX eco is an innovative, high-quality and sustainable product that consists of 50% post-industrial materials, but also meets the specifications in terms of color, surface and workability.
The advantages of sustainable edgebands are most fully realised in jointless processing. Do you work with laser technology for edge processing with the surfaces or do you rely on conventional processes?
We work with PUR hot melt technology. This meets customer requirements and provides the production speed we need.
